This painting depicts a girl looking into a mirror and seeing her grandmother as her reflection. The messages I set out to convey in the painting have to do with self-image. The main concept is "Kujichagulia" (self-determination), which means to define yourself, create for yourself and speak for yourself. By showing the grandmother as the girl's reflection I am saying that it is she/the family that determines what beauty is. It is not determined by outside society. The saying on the mirror beckons the girl to look to her grandmother (who also represents family) to set the standard for beauty and to look to her for affirmation.
