The United States of America is branded as “the land of the free”, yet in many ways diverse peoples are aware that it is built on human slavery and cultural exploitation. Anyone who is of a different cultural background is pressured to assimilate, and their cultural practices often become (mis)appropriated by oppressors. For example, linguistic practices of retaining native languages are repressed to accommodate English speakers, leading to the US’s infamous title as the graveyard of languages. Likewise, when migrant cultures are erased to uphold ‘American’ cultural values and immigrants, refugees, and others are detained or rejected, the country itself becomes a graveyard of dreams. This particular piece brings hope to the coexistence of intersectional identities and multicultural communities.
