The Matka Lady , 2022
paper and pencil

The title of my art is called “The Matka Lady”. The materials I used for the art work were a piece of paper and a pencil. In this artwork, I drew a Pakistani lady holding a decorated “matka” or clay pot, which is used for holding water or food in villages of Pakistan. For the creative process, I made sure the lady had a larger nose with bumps, big eyes, and a sharp jawline which are all a few Pakistani features. For the clothing, I took inspiration from older Pakistani art pieces: she wears an embellished veil, a “dupatta” or stole, and the “kameez'' or loose shirt. I added details to the traditional jewelry such as the earrings, nose ring, and the bangles. The meaning of this artwork is strength: the matka lady holds onto the matka, no matter how light or heavy it is.
