This piece depicts a refugee child in western Sudan. The government’s campaign of genocide has been going on since 2003. Over 3 million people have been a victim in the war. 2015 estimates place the death toll at ~ 400,000. Approximately 6.2 million people in Sudan lack secure access to food. More than 14% of the population suffer from acute malnutrition. Children like this were caught up in the middle of the bloody conflict between the Government of Sudan and the rebel groups Sudan Liberation Movement and Justice and Equality Movement. I used mainly the corner of a sanding block to create the rough edges in this piece. Wiping away the ink dust left a blurred appearance. Translucent ink added a little color to the food bowl. This piece has emotionally moved almost every person that has seen it up close.
