in the artist's own words: "The Chernobyl disaster of April 26, 1986, serves as a backdrop to the current war in Ukraine. I hope viewers will get a sense of the peril humanity continues to place itself in, and that issues of neglect, and dishonesty cannot be simple buried or contained. I wanted to use a color palette that conveyed the deadly, unseen nature of atomic radiation. By scraping the surface of the canvas to create diagonal lines made by the wooden frame, I hoped to achieve the unnatural "spot like" effect that high doses of radiation has on the film footage of Chernobyl."
