STORY:
We can travel the world looking for exotic locations and experiences, but often take for granted things in our own backyard. I have long been fascinated by wildlife and have gone to great lengths to photograph exotic animals all over the world. But recently I felt it was time to start capturing our amazing Australian animals. I had seen the work of Charles Davis, a young Australian who loves photographing in the high country and was fortunate to spend time with Charles in his back yard – the Australian Alps. I especially wanted to find a wombat in the snow. There had been a break in the cold weather and the alpine grass was breaking through in small patches. So, this wombat (nick-named Matilda) had come out of her burrow in search of food. Interestingly, we found her not far from where people were skiing, quite oblivious to Matilda and her home. It required stealth and patience to get close enough to photograph this iconic Australian.
