This painting depicts a man hiding his emotions and inner turmoil. Dark, haunting and overwhelming aesthetic qualities are depicted within the faces of the expressive emotions of the spirits. While the man hides behind his mask, with almost is whole body covered in clothing, he couldn’t help but expose his hand as it is grasping onto his mask which is supposedly keeping his emotions in check. The broken mask implies that no matter how hard you try to put up a façade, it will never be eternal and you will ultimately have to face your demons. I chose three main emotions for the spirits to convey: sadness, anger and fear. I see these three as the most common negative emotions and I hope that the viewers can also relate in feeling these emotions at different times of their lives.
