Russian Warship, Idi Nahui , 2022
drypoint etching printmaking, markers, pencil

My piece was inspired by the 2014 and 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. I explored the history of Ukraine and debunked Putin’s insistence that Ukraine belongs to Russia and has no single identity. This work recquired heavy research into the history of Ukraine from 882AD Kyiv-rus, through the Soviet Union, and post-USSR culture and identity. I used traditional printmaking to emulate the style in which traditional 17th century maps were created, and added various Ukrainian elements and colour overlays to express the artistic developments used in the progressive years.
