It represented the promise of regular work and steady wages, plus an opportunity to participate in the American dream. Reflecting the cultural patchwork of our country at the time, these men came from diverse backgrounds, ethnicity, and race, yet shared similar objectives. This was hard, demanding, and often dangerous work, but a price they were willing to pay.
