Steel Town: Night Shift
, 2015
48 x 44 in (h x w)
During the 1930’s, a dues paid button worn on the shirt of newly organized steelworkers was an important and symbolic detail. It represented the promise of regular work and steady wages, plus an opportunity to participate in the American dream. Reflecting the cultural patchwork of our country at the time, these men came from diverse backgrounds, ethnicity, and race, yet shared similar objectives. This was hard, demanding, and often dangerous work, but a price they were willing to pay.
