C-Type Print of Digital Photogrammetry Image

Actual size: 40 x 60cm

I am an artist and researcher working in the North of England. My practice involves installation, film, sound, music, physical computing, VR, animation, and games. A major theme in my work is the connection between spaces, geometries and texts, especially in interactive media but also in tangible objects including sculpture, drawing and physical interfaces. The process behind my work draws on archaeology, architecture, games and cinema as much as contemporary art and I am particularly interested in using the surfaces and affordances of these media to explore how we engage with uncomfortable spaces.

Photoghasts is a series of works exploring the ragged edges of image-making technologies. As digital cameras and Artificial Intelligence systems proliferate, we are entering a world in which we are asked to place our trust in driverless vehicles, facial recognition software and algorithmic medical imaging. As an artist and researcher working in art and Human-Computer Interaction, I am intrigued by the misunderstandings that machines make when they attempt to make sense of their surroundings. Using digital photogrammetry techniques from architecture and archaeology, each piece begins with hundreds of photographs of a live subject, which are reconstructed into a 3D computer graphic model. The result is then photographed virtually.
