In The Eye Of The Beholder I - IV , 2023

Richard Avedon and Juul Kraijer’s expressionist portraits inspired the distorted blurriness of this series. Light positioned at a low angle distorts facial expressions to achieve elements of horror: torturous distress as a constant psychological state. Contorted features resume a twisted and deceitful perception of self, torn between social media fiction and verisimilitude. IV reciprocates Medusa’s petrifying stare in the mirror, Greek mythology as featured in Kraijer’s work, symbolic of the battle between physical beauty and value of identity.
