“My model in okra is intended to raise awareness about the harmful effects of shipwrecks on the environment—one of the less discussed sources of pollutants. An article by Marine Insight cited the United Nations on an estimated 3 million shipwrecks around the world. A study from the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management classified ~20% of shipwrecks off the Swedish coast at least potentially hazardous for the environment.
The primary issues shipwrecks pose is the leaking of heavy metals, and oils. Because of how difficult and expensive they are to clean up, they can cause massive damage over large portions of ocean. Hopefully my piece will help people realize the impact of leaving our mess around the planet.”
