Juneteenth is a day that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. In celebration of it, I wanted to look more into the intimate and familial aspects of Juneteenth and how important it is when it comes to Black family. I chose to have a little girl with messy paint on her face, holding her parents’ hands to show what Juneteenth has begun to mean to people over the past few decades. It means togetherness and community, and I thought the best way to show that was through the pure bliss and innocence of a little kid. It’s named “In the Eyes of the Future” because the child represents the future of the Black community, just like Juneteenth reminds us of how far we’ve come into the future every year.
