Pat Steir’s image not only evokes cascading water, but also is produced through the movement of pigment or solvent down the surface of the print matrix with the aid of gravity. Her study of Chinese and Japanese art, such as the formal techniques used by Hiroshige on view nearby, and her knowledge of Jackson Pollock’s painting process, helped to inform her own practice of depicting the motion of bodies of water through the movement of her body.
