Claire’s clay masks inspired by African masks were created in 1999 for her graduating project play “Shaduhs Uh Voodoo”. about a family living under domestic violence.. The play was semi-autobiographical and the masks were used by the ‘shaduh dancers’ who represented the violence in the family. They are called Caribbean Masks to reflect my Claire’s background. Claire was born Barbados.

ID: This image shows five masks in varying angles and positions on top of a structure covered with black fabric. The top masks are partials of exaggerated male faces from the upper stand to the lower stands. They are all colored different shades of brown. A wooden masks of a woman with small beaded eyes, a wide sawdust nose and rope to represent dreadlocks stands to the top right. A plain white wall rises up in the background. In front of the wall are hangings of colorful, African cloths.
