The Pawn” is a short story I wrote inspired by Rene Magritte’s “Decalcomania”; it is set in the Edwardian Age, ca. 1910, and is about drawing the curtain on social stereotypes and the power it sometimes has over society. For my Final Themed Project I created a tableau with an illustrative feel based on the story I wrote using watercolours, fineliner pen, colour pencils and chalk pastel powder – the final outcome is A3 size. I was really pleased with the combination of media, especially when using my chalk pastel powder technique, where I brushed over the painting with shavings of chalk pastel with a soft paintbrush to achieve a luminescent effect. Besides capturing the overall mood and plot of the story, the art piece also highlights the personalities of the individual characters using complementary colours and proportions. It literally expresses the moment in the short story when Mr Thease said that Emile Brasse is his “faithful little pawn”. It represents the control Mr Thease has over Emile in a social hierarchy.
