Yunnan Mountain People , 1998

The photograph is from Wu Jialin’s (吴家林) “Yunnan Mountain People” (云南山里人), it shows mule carts framed alongside bicycles, trucks and planes on a road near Kunming airport in Yunnan province. This is the author most satisfied with the classic works, he implicitly expressed his ideas. The metaphorical nature of this work can be explained from the perspective of "road" : China's development on the road of reform and development, especially in the early stage, is unbalanced: multiple forms of ownership coexist, the polarization is serious, the path of reform and opening up is not straightforward, and there are inconsistencies and issues that have gathered along the way. After the reform and opening up, the coexistence of multiple forms of ownership and serious polarization reflect the characteristics of China's socialist market economy, but also reveal some problems and challenges in China's economic development, which need to be solved by reform methods and means. Mule carts represent the traditional way of life in mountainous rural areas of Yunnan, while bicycles, trucks and airplanes represent modern means of transportation and lifestyle. This scene reflects the author's thoughts and worries about the social transformations brought about by reform and opening up, as well as her respect and admiration for traditional culture. It is also a memorial to rural life in the mountains of Yunnan.
