My 16th Doljanchi , 2023
36 x 24 x 1 in (h x w x d)
Watercolor

Every first birthday of a Korean child is celebrated with a major event called "Doljanchi", blessing the baby with a prosperous and healthy future. As a tradition, the child is presented with a variety of items representing different life paths to choose from, and the items they pick carry on the others' hopes and expectations for the child as he or she grows up. "My 16th Doljanchi" is a piece that I hold dear to me, exploring self expression and discovery through the connection of my culture. Being a teenager, my choices and desires are much more vague and outstretched than when I was a child, which often lead to insecurity or confusion, especially as I prepare for college. Because watercolor is such a flexible and uncontrolled medium, it represents the uncertainty of the future, but also the hope of life. Through my art, I want to remind others that sometimes, people must return to their roots to find themselves and see how their culture is important to their lives.
