This artwork is inspired by the song “You Weren’t Meant to Say That” by Rare Occasions, representing the personal conflict of hiding one’s deepest insecurities and vulnerabilities in a desperate attempt to feel secure. The singer conveys their inability to connect with others and relying on material things for temporary pleasure. The bold expression of colors through the use of markers explains the suppressed emotions and despair that a person experiences when lacking the essence of human connection. The bird in her hair represents her flight towards opening up, and the a wing protrudes from her head as a sign of opening for flight. At the same time, her clothes and hair almost seem to be overflowing the page, expressing the harmful intrusive thoughts and emotions that can’t be suppressed anymore. I wanted to show the destructive conflict through fire and crazy colors, while conveying the beauty in finding yourself. Through this artwork, I hope to encourage others to value their relationships and recognize that even our deepest insecurities can be beautiful.
