People often let others define their own path and identity, scared of the uncertain future. "Dear Deer' conveys the message that to truly find yourself, one must first regain control of their life. The woman in the artwork represents a deer, which symbolizes devotion in a Christian context. The hands on the woman's head can be interpreted as the deer's antlers or another character's hands that control her. Like a deer in headlights, people who don't understand themselves or feel that they can't be who they were meant to be tend to be in a state of fear and confusion. I used digital art as it gives the artist freedom, yet restricted myself to a specific color palette. In the same way, people have many opportunities to follow their dreams, but are confined by the expectations of people around them or societal norms. As I experiment with my art, I am also in the process of finding who I am, and I hope my art will help others to venture outside their comfort zone and gain confidence to try to discover and express themselves.
