"The Self"
In 2001, my mom and dad met.
My mom grew up in a small farming town, Portsmouth, Ohio. Here, all the men worked at the nuclear power plant 5 miles north and the women were either staying at home or part time for the chamber of commerce.
My dad grew up in an equally small town directly across the border, over a bridge and over the Ohio River, in South Shore, Kentucky (commonly referred to as South Portsmouth). Here, he and the men in his family ran a junk yard in the hills of the Appalachian Mountains.
The Ohio River separates Kentucky and Ohio along the entirety of the state line, and despite the separation of these two states, my parents' respective towns were often intertwined because of the connection made by one bridge, the only bridge within miles up and down the river. Some don’t believe in fate, but without the help of this bridge, my parents would have never met.
