Dust to dust, earth to earth, all things circle around, though dead, though alive, though alive, though dead
The “Compendium of Materia Medica” ultimately consisted of 1,300 bricks made of Chinese herbs and flour. She collected the dregs of the herbs, made them into medicine bricks then built them into medicine monuments, and cremated them, chanting their names and letting the flames purify everything. The process of them carbonising and turning into grass ash to return to nature and enter the next reincarnation is also the law of destiny for all things in the world; it is a funeral for herbal medicine and for all living beings. Death is only a great new beginning of life, in another form, so on and so forth, and so on and so forth. Herbal medicine, as a part of plants, also contains the basic properties of plants: growing, reproducing, dying and turning into ashes. The different forms of herbs are able to cure different diseases of human beings, and in a sense, they become part of the energy of the human body, which is a great contributor to human beings. The dregs of medicinal herbs are the final resting place of the plant, and even the dregs of medicinal herbs, when burnt and carbonised, have an extremely important medicinal value.
She was born into a family of Chinese medicine practitioners who have run their own family pharmacy for generations. Since she was a child, she has been helping her mother and father in the family pharmacy, and since she was 4 years old, her father has been taking her out into nature to pick herbs, to learn about the different forms of plants in the Compendium of Materia Medica, and to climb into the medicine cabinet to eat all kinds of medicinal herbs, such as longan (dried cinnamon balls) and so on. Until now she feels warm when she smells herbal medicine, as if it is a lot of plants clamouring and is full of life. Western medicine focuses more on fighting the diseased area. In contrast, traditional Chinese herbal medicine focuses more on the balance of all aspects of the entire body, with each organ performing its function. Herbs are designed to correct the imbalance of heat and cold in the body in disease states, and each herb has its own hot and cold properties. Among them, charcoal herbs can treat all kinds of bleeding, such as haemoptysis, vomiting blood and blood in stool. In the film, there are 1,897 traditional Chinese herbs. Reading their names is like remembering the life of plants, respecting, praising and remembering the life of all things.
