Bare feet are very common in my family. The act of removing shoes upon arriving home is a sign of intimacy and comfort, which he enjoys depicting in his work. "Batinga," named after my grandmother's street name, recreates the atmosphere of her backyard. It portrays the habit of relaxing, connecting with one's home, and the assurance of returning to the welcoming embrace of one's household.
"Calangos" refers to "casal calango," an expression I recently discovered, which relates to the pose of the depicted characters—the embrace from behind, symbolizing protection and the intimacy of being in someone's arms. "Calango" is the name of a species of Brazilian lizard and has become synonymous with someone clever, sly, and agile. In the context of the artwork, it also references the stretched and open legs of the depicted figures, as well as their slender and elongated physique.
