"Sutcliffe was the first to bring rock'n'roll records into the Art School, until then the bastion of Trad Jazz, Sutcliffe was involved in the Art School dances, and brought a cool, US-inspired image to the college with a dress sense and style based in part on James Dean.  He painted listening to Elvis records, yet in all his sketchbooks there appears to be only one reference to pop music, a 1957 colour drawing of Elvis Presley.  Compositionally it pastiches Mondrian and the Cubists, and depicts Elvis surrounded by guitars, jiving figures and the titles of some of his hits."  -Bryan Biggs

"Fittingly, it was spring 1959; we were all on the cusp of the sixties, and I swear few could have ever predicted the social revolution that was to follow, that we were indeed to be all shook up. We had no idea."  -Pauline Sutcliffe
