Composed along the edge of the Bronze Age Fort at Small Down, St Michael’s Church on the hill in Glastonbury is in the distance shrouded in hawthorn and blackthorn bushes. The photograph portrays the idea of a pilgrimage route or notional lines of energy and consciousness. The St Michael Alignment runs through this part of the Somerset landscape, and beyond to a whole line of other places dedicated to the Archangel of light as well as through many ancient sites such as Avebury and Bury St Edmunds. The line follows the azimuth of the Mayday Sunrise and can extended all around the world as well as across southern England between East Anglia and Lands End in Cornwall. From this hill fort (Small Down Knoll) through a notch in the horizon to the East, Cley Hill, between Warminster and Frome can also be seen, leading on to Stonehenge. The photograph relates to Small Down Nova lV which was painted in memory of this place taking the colours, pattern and texture and making the connection between the earthiness of the place and all the other places along the line as one.
