Joane Cromwell, born Catherine Joane Strode, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago as a painter/illustrator. In the early 1920’s she moved to Southern California and took on the pseudonym of Joane Cromwell. She became entranced with the California coast and desert regions, particularly the sycamore and eucalyptus trees, and desert landscapes. In 1922 she settled in Laguna Beach atop Temple Hills, with a commanding view of the ocean and landscapes.
