"In my Reflets work, I make these two-dimensional representations of “perfection” into just one of many layers in the myriad I see and capture, thereby reducing them even further, and yet, the intention is there, beneath the glare and reflection of glass and mirror. Often, the body is there, but the head is in the clouds – as if there are no thoughts. In Witless, St Petersburg, there is only a body, and in Two, Paris two faces are symbolically so two dimensional they are mounted on corrugated. In many others beautiful faces stare directly at the viewer, beckoning with lips pursed.

Subtle? Not very. Subliminal and seductive? Absolutely. Like scrambled signals, my work uses these advertisements to create a conundrum - it’s up to the viewer to discern what’s actually for sale. I guarantee it’s not the women; like sirens in ancient sea tales, they’re just the lure."

Susan Aurinko, a photographer, writer, and curator, has shown her work in France, Italy, and India, as well as in the US. Aurinko’s work appears on several book covers, including The Stranger Among Us, Ariel, Scar Tissue, Slut Lullabies, and Bound and Broken, and four of her photographs are included in the Museum of Contemporary Photography’s permanent collection.
