Mouth with Nails is from a group of works on paper through which Tania Bruguera pays homage to other artists by combining elements from her own work with theirs. The outline of the human figure is reminiscent of the works of fellow Cuban artist Ana Mendieta’s Silueta series, in which she placed outlines of feminine bodies in the natural landscape. Nails first appeared in Bruguera’s early performance work, Displacement, in which she impersonated the Afro-Cuban spiritual folk figure, Nkisi Nkonde, by wearing a suit covered in earth and nails. The location of the nails in this figure’s mouth alludes to Bruguera’s interest in discussing issues of censorship and the political violence by the Cuban government towards artists that criticize the administration.

Boca con clavos pertenece a un grupo de obras sobre papel a través de las cuales Tania Bruguera rinde homenaje a otros artistas combinando elementos de su propia obra con la de ellos. El contorno de la figura humana recuerda las obras de la también artista cubana Ana Mendieta en la serie Silueta, en la que colocó contornos de cuerpos femeninos en el paisaje natural. Boca con clavos apareció por primera vez en la obra de perfromance inicial de Bruguera, Desplazamiento, en la que personificaba a la figura popular espiritual afrocubana, Nkisi Nkonde, vistiendo un traje cubierto de tierra y clavos. La ubicación de los clavos en la boca de esta figura alude al interés de Bruguera en discutir temas de censura y la violencia política del gobierno cubano hacia artistas que critican a la administración.
