A morning mist rises over a fishing dock and blends into a rising sun. The only hint of color is a single blue object contrasting with the timeless pale undefined water, mist, and air beyond the dock.

In 1716, the journal of Diego Peña listed the Timucuan name of a lake and sinkhole, Afanochua, in modern-day Alachua county. This is Paynes Prairie of today which was Paynes Lake of past years. The Timucuan word “chua” means a jug that fills and empties, much like Paynes Lake and Prairie. Alachua county, Florida is also a word of Timucuan origin, not Spanish as some suspect.

The Wheelchair Highwaymen frequently pay homage to the Native Americans of Florida in their aerial photographs composed with drone and hands-free technology that allows those without use of their limbs to create stunning works of art. They are Arts4All Florida registered artists.
