Edgar Payne was born in Washburn, Missouri. At the age of 14 his goal was to be an artist. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily self-taught, he studied briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago. In Laguna Beach he helped form the Laguna Beach Art Association, which is now the Laguna Art Museum. Recognized as one of California’s most accomplished landscape artists, his passion was nature, particularly mountains. Payne Lake was named in his memory.
