R.E. Russell was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was educated at Swaine School of Design in Massachusetts and at the University of Kansas. Serving in the Navy during the Korean War, he later worked as an art director for a large art firm. In 1967 he moved to Laguna Beach, where he participated in the Festival of Arts and Sawdust Festival for 40 years.
