Οι Γλαύκες είναι νυχτόβια αρπακτικά πουλιά, και περιλαμβάνουν είδη όπως η κουκουβάγια, ο γκιώνης και ο μπούφος. Έχουν εξαιρετικά αναπτυγμένες τις αισθήσεις της ακοής και της όρασης, που τις βοηθούν να κυνηγούν στο σκοτάδι. Οι μακριές και στρογγυλεμένες φτερούγες τους, με το μαλακό και πυκνό πτέρωμα τους προσφέρουν τη δυνατότητα για σχεδόν απολύτως αθόρυβη πτήση.
