Self Portrait
Pencil Crayon

The Grade 9's from Mayfield S.S. were challenged to create a self-portrait using pencil crayon, inspired by the work of artist Kehinde Wiley. Their portraits have been combined with elaborate patterned backgrounds reflecting each student's individual personality, heritage, and culture, which is something Wiley is known for in his own work. We see peonies coloured with bright red to represent Chinese culture, as well as beauty and good fortune. Patterns inspired by Ghanaian clothing; specifically Nsu Bras and Kentes, as well as Gujarati textiles and mandala designs seen during the Navratri festival. Like Wiley, the Grade 9's used their self-portraits to showcase themes of representation in art and to celebrate their individuality.
