Hudson River School artist and painter of the American West Albert Bierstadt was an avid traveler. He first visited Nassau in the Bahamas in 1878, continuing to make trips there into the 1880s. The present work depicts a pristine elevated panorama of the lush greenery and therapeutic waters of Nassau. Bierstadt was a remarkable observer of the light and feeling of a place, and in the present work the shimmering waters and sailboats out for a leisurely sail invite the viewer in to experience a serene and peaceful setting.
