The Paschal Lamb , 1990
34 x 26 cm (h x w)
Oil on board

© Ansel Krut

The sacrificial or Paschal lamb was traditionally slaughtered on the eve of Passover and eaten on the first night of the Jewish Passover holiday with bitter herbs and matzo. This work relates to the artist's earlier more classical style, which has gradually become 'more anarchic', ostensibly playful, but concealing complex messages. Krut's occasionally sinister subject matter has sometimes been linked to his upbringing in South Africa during the Apartheid era.
