"Preoccupation With Aesthetics" #3

Painting With Light
1927 | Miller 91
Designed by Harry Miller
Author Griffith Borgeson once noted that “Miller’s preoccupation with aesthetics was legendary.” Shop foreman Fred Offenhauser told Borgeson:Miller could have made a lot more money if he hadn’t cared so much about finish… all of his castings had to be hand-scraped and polished to a satin finish, and every part was machined. It took us from 6,000 to 6,500 hours to build a car… between 700 and 1,000 hours went into beautifying, just putting the finish on each machine. Showmanship is a big part of racing, and Harry’s cars made every race a show to remember.
