In February 2020, I went for a weekend getaway to Death Valley, CA. Upon my arrival, signs indicated that campsites were almost at max capacity. After finding a spot and setting up camp, I drove up to Dante's View. This point is 5,476 ft. high and overlooks the lowest point in North America – ‘Badwater Basin’, 282 ft. below sea level. At the time, I remember thinking: this is a fun picture of how small humans look. But now, I see how this picture captured a large gathering of people enjoying the outdoors and all doing what I love doing – visiting these non-earth-like landscapes. When I do nature photography, I do not like humans being in my shots, which was my worry upon finding out that the park was almost at capacity. But now that we are all stuck at home, I do miss the random human interaction I would run into on a lonely trail, mountain or pit stop. I miss exchanging stories of our adventures and life experiences, and sharing the same joy together of nature. And yes, all those little black dots in the photograph are people walking 5,758 feet below me.
