Rainbow Zebras came out of a series I painted last winter. I photographed zebras in the zoo standing together in the warm sunshine. The first few zebra paintings were representational color mirroring the black and white stripes. Although they were distinct and graphic, I longed to say something more with emotion. I took a risk and began painting color on the stripes. Each color bled into a new hue and the stripes took on a more playful role. To solidify the anatomy, I glazed each animal with relating color wash. The result is an intense, dynamic portrayal of zebras moving in and around the rainbow of unexpected color. This painting creates a unique interplay of color and creates light and vibrancy to this iconic animal.
