Bowersock Mills, among Hatton’s most modernist prints, shows the confluence of industry, commerce, and transportation. Located along the Kansas River above the dam at Lawrence, Kansas, the Bowersock Mills complex is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. In operation since 1874, the Bowersock facility is the site of the first modern flour mill in Kansas and the first and only source of hydropower on the Kansas River. The artist’s arrangement of rectilinear architectural components appearing in the right background recalls the synthetic cubist compositions of American Precisionist artists such as Charles Sheeler; Hatton’s choice of a regional modern industrial subject also echoes the Precisionist’s concerns. The graceful curve of the pair of railroad tracks running from the left foreground toward the mill complex provides a pleasing compositional tension and balances the geometric rigidity of the buildings.
