The engine crew of a Canadian National freight about to depart Fort Erie, Ontario—with 2–8–2 no. 3496 on the head end—awaits the signal from their conductor to proceed. Fort Erie was one of the major entry points into Canada for rail traffic from the United States. There was also considerable rail traffic generated by local industry, due to the plentiful power provided by nearby Niagara Falls. Shaughnessy made several iconic images at night; this is a classic.
