A terminal laborer lubricates the driving rods on a Norfolk & Western 4–8–2 in Hagerstown, Maryland, the northern terminus of that road’s Shenandoah Valley line. Shaughnessy often saw the railroad landscape as a social space. As his work progressed he became very interested in the interrelationships between man and machine and the photographic possibilities they presented.
