At this time of global crisis and separation, in a world which is unfamiliar and incomprehensible to us, I am reading the letters which my grandfather wrote to my grandma, during world war 2. 'I could cheerfully have wrung his neck,' reflecting on parallels of isolation and separation of the world we find ourselves in, I am creating images using his 1940’s Box Brownie and Polaroid lifts to replicate the current imposed fractured and disjointed landscape. A personal yet universal piece made during this time of uncertainty using text and image to create a physical and metaphorical link to historical times. This work discusses the global challenges through a journey of domestic realities. ‘Lest we forget’ what a mockery are those words’ my Grandfather says in one of his letters, as if predicting the future and how in their time and ours we easily become accustomed to our environment and quickly forget the considerable problems with our societal norms.
