Orchid Cuckoo Bee
Category - Macro
[BPA2021-225]

Taken from the Microsculpture project , this image shows an Orchid Cuckoo Bee from the collections of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. It is created from over 8,000 individual photographs using focus stacking techniques. The insect is photographed in 25 different sections and each section is treated like a tiny still life with the lighting changing each time to ensure that specific area of the insect's body look as beautiful and clear as possible. For example, the eyes will have a completely different lighting set up to the wings because of their different opacity, texture and shape.. Each image from the Microsculpture series takes approximately 3 weeks to create.
