During my 5-week experience with this summer program, I’ve had the opportunity to listen to different speakers talk about their experiences growing up as a Latino/a student. Hearing them speak on their difficulties of going to a predominantly white institution (PWI) made me realize the importance of touching back to your roots. Growing up, my first language was Spanish, but because we are in America, everything is in English. Overtime, you start to forget who you are or what you represent. The finger gesture represents touching back at your culture. For example, an individual with dual nationalities might only like to rep one nationality than another, and that’s okay, I just feel like learning about all your cultures or just being aware of them is very important to figuring out who you are and what you will achieve. I chose a yellow background because yellow signifies creativity and optimism. Yellow also represents happiness, which is one of my frequent moods when I’m with my team. Apart from living through a pandemic, we are all here still smiling.
