This painting was done at full moon near Long Knoll, Kilmington in hidden Wiltshire (Somerset really), quite near Gare Hill. The nearby knolls are ridges of chalk that mark the most Westerly edge of the great chalk syncline, which stretches across Southern England. The same twisted chalk bed that forms Salisbury the North and South Downs, the Marlborough Downs and the cliffs of Dover. For me they are key landmarks in the journey East from the West country. Leading to what will become the great Ridgeways and Icknield ways a network of old lanes and byways and drover’s roads intersect the luxuriant, verdant June countryside.drover’s roads intersect the luxuriant, verdant June countryside.
