Ghost Bellow
Category - Land Animal
[BPA2021-182]

During the month of October a truly wild population of Red Deer congregate on Derbyshire's East Moor for the rut. Experimenting with slow shutter speeds and intentional camera motion I wanted to create some different images of the great bellowing stags. One evening, walking back in the dusk I was lucky enough to come across a huge male poisoned above the horizon, thus providing enough contrast to make an image. I dropped the shutter speed to 1/3 of a second and with my 500mm lens stayed distanced and composed my subject to the right of the frame. Just as the stag let out a huge bellow I pressed the shutter, simultaneously moving the camera to the left producing this ghostly separation within one connected moment.
