This photograph explores the painted representation of women found on bars across Jamaica and how such images further impact on women and girls by creating streets and spaces that are male dominated. Such depictions of women used in vernacular advertising on bars reinforce gender norms where women’s bodies are sexualised to appeal to men linked to commodity culture. The photograph is part of my wider project #handpaintedjamaica and is part of a mini-series that explores the psychogeography of places experienced as a female through walking the streets and the extent to which recording of every day visual culture provides a geographical map of sexism experienced by women and girls in the environment.
