Talmudic Discussion , 1905
37 x 25.5 cm (h x w)
Pencil on paper

Although few of Rothenstein’s surviving drawings of Jewish subjects relate directly to his finished oils, the drawing Talmudic Discussion is probably a preparatory drawing for his oil Corner of the Talmud School, despite the final, finished composition featuring only two sitters instead of the three in the drawing. Both compositions include the bearded man facing the viewer from behind the table and the foreground figure with his back turned towards the viewer, and focus on the interior of the scene and the worshippers.
