Pat Lasch’s Prayer Cloth series was created after the death of her parents. In the 1990’s Phillip Glass, her close at the time friend, introduced Lasch to the ideas of Buddhism so she traveled to India where she learned about prayer paper and its uses. Each gold leafed square contains a prayer locked forever inside and mounted on netting held together by heavy Arches rag paper.

Pat Lasch is a 1970’s feminist sculptor and early member of the pioneering A.I.R. Gallery. Her emotive objects and works on paper employ decorative forms that evoke beauty, indulgence, fantasy, desire, and sometimes loss. She is best known for her cakes and dresses and was invited to create one of her signature mixed media tower cakes for the Museum of Modern Art’s 50th anniversary party in 1979. The works exhibited here are from a small, never before shown 1970’s series of works on paper using paint three dimensionally in what has since become the artist’s signature embellishments.

Lasch’s work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Academy Museum, New York; the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; the Palm Springs Art Museum, California; and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Lasch was given a major retrospective exhibition at The Palm Springs Art Museum, California, in 2017. Most recently, she was included in “With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972–1985” at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, which traveled to the Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, in Spring 2021.
