Telephone , 1876

Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone was inspired by his assistant's accidental pluck of a transmitting reed on his telegraph. This first known sketch of the idea from 1876 illustrates a person speaking into the wide end of a cone, transferring electrical signals to a receiver on the opposite end. While simple, the drawing highlights the essentials of Alexander's extraordinary invention, and formed the basis of his subsequent telephone patent.
